Some time ago I decided I'd had enough of Vista and would go back to XP. After 2 BSODS and explorer crashing when I tried to rename a file, I decided now was the time.

Sounds easy... I disconected 3 of my four drives, partitioned and formatted my O/S drive, and started the XP install procedure. Hmmm, evertime I got to the part where I expected it to say 'Press any key to boot from disk...' it just went straight into setup again. Nothing I did to the drive with either formatting or partitioning would get past this. Clearly, Vista still had it's grubby little paws on this disk.

So, back to basics. Thankfully when I built this pc I kept a floppy drive... Out came my Windows98 boot disk and straight into DOS. From there I used my equally ancient Killdisk. It took an hour and a half for Killdisk to finish, but it took Vista and erased its ass. Vista is no more, it has ceased to be - it is an ex O/S.

XP installed as smooth as ever. So here I am, in an O/S which so far has no drivers or programs installed. I'll get to that later. Meanwhile I can stick two fingers up (in the form of a 'V') to Vista. Hasta la Vista Vista, as they say

if you have a modern rig, run vista. if you don't, run xp.

Why would I when XP provides better performance and a less intrusive UI? There's a huge number of configurations that could run Vista, but get nothing but reduced performance out of it.

I hate the start menu because it doesn't let me access certain parts of the OS that I could access in XP. That's by definition a reduction in options - a bad thing.

well i keep my fingers crossed for windows 7 looks good of what ive read!

on Dec 29, 2008

you vista haters don't like not having a cascading menu all over your desktop or what?

It's amazing how many people don't know how to properly organize a start menu in XP and end up with a screen full of menu. Mine is very compact and easy to use. Moreover, if you don't know what you are looking for it's all there in front of you.

With Vista, you click down into folders, realize what you want is not there, and have to click back again - very annoying.

I put together a custom this past summer and had the missfortune to put Vista on it... Sadly I don't feel like forking over the cash or effort to put XP back on here... Oh well it isn't that bad... Only two BOD's... And other stuff...

*Sigh

fuzzy, i completely agree with your statement concerning people not knowing how to organize a start menu. actually, i couldn't agree more. however, i dont agree with your opinion of the vista start menu be annoying. to each his own, though. i LOVE raisin pie. chances are, you do not.

as for daton's comment about reduced performance, i can not agree with that at all. i keep a spare hdd sitting in my rig just for xp. i very seldom boot into xp....maybe twice a month. i think vista outperforms xp a great deal.

i repair only rigs i built for clients. i build 3 to 5 each week. that isn't much, i know, but for no advertising other than word-of-mouth, it isn't bad. i'd bet i build more than the 3 computer shops in town, though. anyway, it's a few extra dollars a month for me back to my point: when repairing rigs that have a 'windows problem', i'd say a vast majority of them are xp based rigs. it's not often i get called for a vista related problem. most of the vista related issues are due to the new vista users not knowing where the items they want are now located in vista. usually, it's a control panel item. since vista was released, i've had but one client ask to have vista removed and xp installed. that was due to him not wanting to purchase more than 1 gig of ram. i admit vista needs ram!  (the parts for a new i7 based rig should be here tomorrow. i'm looking forward to building that one! phil may not see it until wednesday evening or thursday morning LOL))

For the record when I switched to Vista I actually got better performance except when running DX10 (duh). I waited until last spring and upgraded to 64bit and everything's been smooth going except for some audio driver issues (due to 64bit) and getting use to the gui layouts.

Do you need to switch? Nope. But I've had no serious issues in the past nine months and rarely do I have any crashes and lockups. To be honest, I'm not sure I've even had a bsod, but I certainly haven't been plagued by em.

...Vista...

Did you miss the memo?

This thread is about pie now.

To be honest, I'm not sure I've even had a bsod, but I certainly haven't been plagued by em.

I has my first BSOD in Vista x64 last night.  I tried to install a free ZIP proggie (7Z, I think it was called) to see if it was any good or not... as soon as I clicked the install button after setup, Vista spat the dummy and went to a BSOD.  It was no biggie, though, I just did a restart and ran ccleaner to remove any entries, etc... all has been fine since.

The only other time I had a BSOD in Vista was in Vista Ultimate 32 bit when I had a faulty graphics card.  However, that was a hardware issue and resolved with a replacement card.

The performance in vista for games and software are proven less than in XP.... alot of benchmarks on this and i confirm this doing benchmarks myself. BUT one thing i like about vista is how it handles memory compared to vista i had alot of RAM errors in XP that does not happen in vista...(i get these errors because of high volt when OC burned some sticks hehe).. Ive tried the ultimate 64bit and dont see any advantage for the average user just more problems less drivers so if anyone thinking of switching to vista pick 32bit atleast for some year/years mabye the world will be 64bit enough when win7 comes somewhere around 2010... And more problems with xp machines is probably because its a more open OS than Vista... me being a advanced user, hate this about vista the UAC makes me go YUK! Vista feels like its for people who dont want to know computers.. alot of crap happens in the background without your knowledge... in XP this is more transparent that also is its problem for a beginner or dontcare type of user its just to much options in senetive areas that u can mess up hence MS came up with UAC... anyway i think ill quit my ramblings here heh

Vista 64 ftw and never looking back. Atleast it's awesome on my computer

Regarding Vista and performance, i came across this yesterday: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2304031,00.asp

These test show that after Vista SP1 the performance is equal or even better than XP. I wouldn't be surprised if there are test showing the opposite, though.
